Top of the World highway

Upon leaving Dawson City (town) we took a small ferry over the Yukon River that reminded me of the ferry from Rocky Hill to Glastonbury in Connecticut. After crossing, we headed west over what is considered the “Top Of The World Highway” (What will these marketing people think of next!).

The Top Of The World Highway is a 80 mile dirt road along a ridge in the mountains that leads to Chicken, Alaska (a town named because it was a word they could spell) where the pavement starts. For our trip it should have been called “In The Clouds Highway” because we were fogged in for most of the trip. When the sky was clear, the views were very nice.

Once we hit pavement in Chicken Alaska, the road was not much better. Pot holes the size of hub caps made me feel like I was in Boston again. We had to do a lot of swerving which can be unnerving to those in the back of the RV.

When we got to Tok, Alaska, our RV was so caked in mud and dirt, that we stopped at a local car wash (a store with a hose) and washed off some of the grime. That night it rained and get most of the rest off for us.
